The clean bench or "hood" is a work area with its own HEPA-filtered air supply. Protection is provided by capturing room air, passing the air through a HEPA filter, and directing the filtered air horizontally across the work surface at a constant speed toward the user.

Both horizontal and vertical laminar flow hoods provide unidirectional airflow that protects products on the work surface against particles and particulates.

A vertical laminar flow clean bench draws air from under the hood, filters it with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter, and then forces the air down across the workspace and out the hood at the user. A vertical laminar flow hood is useful for parts assembly, to house processing equipment, or to pour agar plates, for example. The workspace of a horizontal laminar flow clean bench is bathed in a HEPA-filtered horizontal laminar airflow, and is often used for clinical or pharmaceutical applications, or whenever a sterile, particulate-free environment is needed.

Clean benches are available with horizontal laminar flow or with vertical laminar flow. Both provide a HEPA-filtered environment that protects the sample from airborne contamination.
